Monsoon June

Writer: sanctuarylakesdevonsanctuarylakesdevon

The weather this month has been pretty horrendous and for mid summer i just hope it gets better at some point. Everything is growing like crazy with the sunshine / showers we are getting and the lilys are looking amazing. The abundant irises are full of Bees and its so crucial to encourage and develop plants and flowers that enable our insects to thrive.

Chris and i had popped out for a few hours and the Tench had just finished spawning, they were definitely out of sorts with the bites being confined to small twitches and half pulls of the float, nevertheless Chris still managed to weedle one out.

With the Tenching not great we had a quick go on the Carp but surprise, surprise they in solidarity with the Tench were really being fussy and not falling for any of the usual tricks. I did eventually land one of the new Stock fish that hadn't leaned to tow the party line.

Last night i popped out to check on the lakes and try and winkle out a Tench, as i didn't cast a line until nearly 7pm it could be a tall order. Half a can of corn later and the first pin bubbles started frothing on the surface at the edge of a big lily bed. The float started its gentle dance, rising slowly up then laying flat before sliding away. The strike was met with the dogged pressure of an angry male Tench, the light tackle giving the fish ample opportunities to drag me through the pad but side strain and patience one the day. The little male was a proper battled warrior and i took a couple of quick snaps before slipping him back.

I continued with the Tench landing another smallish fish before deciding to spend the last hour crusting for a carp. The top lake was looking lovely with the surface punctuated by numerous feeding Rudd, a Carp cruised between the islands and away from where i stood. I added a scattering of bread crust and poured myself a coffee to wait for the arrival of a customer. A full 10 minutes elapsed before the first swirl erupted around a chunk of bread that had drifted into the danger zone, a large dense weedbed. They would need to meet me halfway before i consider casting a bait in that direction, the dense weed puts all the odds in the favor of the Carp . Another 10 minutes and with 3 fish now competing i felt my chance had arrived, i cast away from the last swirl and allowed the slight breeze to push it into the path of the fish. Swoosh! the bread was sucked clean down and the Carp dived towards cover, i gave no quarter and help my ground on this initial power surge, it payed off as the fish went out into the lake and decided to try deeper. With the initial battle won it wasn't long before the fish was circling in front of me, netted first time and another nice common was in the net. This fish was a double but i didn't weigh it, the condition was superb and once again the feed seems to be filling them out.

Thats it until the next one, Dad has bought a new tractor and mower so the grass is going to meet its maker very shortly, and boy it needs doing.
